Get out your math journal and get ready to practice! Pause the video along the way to try and answer the questions. Then, check your work by listening to the explanation. After studying maps and globes and learning about the different continents and oceans, we decided to make our own globes. In an arts integrated lesson, we first made papier mache forms. We then painted them blue and traced on the continents, before painting them green (except for Antarctica - the students elected to paint that white to better represent the climate of that Southernmost continent). Finally, we labeled our oceans and continents. It was an in-depth process but the students had a lot of fun both learning about geography (one group even made up a song about the continents and taught it to the rest of the class) and art.
Aloha Families - Our first book order catalogs have arrived. The kids were so excited to go through them. Each child will receive $7 in free books, thanks to the Scholastic Book Trust. Please have your child turn in their order form by Tues., Sept. 6. Mahalo!
The 2016-2017 school year is off to a great start. We've been busy learning about traditions in reading, place value in math, plant parts in science, the Olympics in Social Studies and the famous artists Monet and Van Gogh in art.
For science, after we learned about plant parts and the plant life cycle, we then studied the Scientific Method and are now experiencing it for ourselves with our first science experiment. We planted several kinds of seeds, made hypotheses about which ones would germinate first and have been making careful observations every day. Many of the seeds have now become seedlings and we transplanted them into soil this week. It was a fun, if messy, afternoon. It's been field trip season here in Third Grade. Last week we had our field trip to the MACC. Students had the chance to learn about the voyages of the Hokulea and explore the concepts of the ship, celestial navigation and tradition through dance, drama and fine arts. As always, it was a great day with lots of wonderful information and hands-on experiences for the kids.
We had a great field trip to Kealia Pond earlier this week. On this outing, we learned about the plants and animals that make up this special wetland. Before we went, we read about some of those animals and learned about the various ways they got to our island ("Wind", "Wings" and "Waves"). The kids had a great time using binoculars to watch birds, trying to collect butterflies and fishing in the pond. It was a muddy success and many thanks to our chaperones who volunteered their time to help out.
This year, our class was invited to join classes from all over the country in a "postcard tour" of the United States. We researched interesting facts about Hawaii and used that information to write postcards to one class in each state. In return, we have been receiving postcards from all over the country and have been able to learn fun facts about every state. It's made for a fun, ongoing geography lesson as well, as we look at our map to see where each state is. It has been fun getting mail from all over the country and learning about all of the different states.
We had a great field trip to the Maui Ocean Center the day before Fall Break. Many thanks to our parent chaperones for coming with us and helping out. It is much-appreciated!
