It's been field trip season here in Third Grade. Last week we had our field trip to the MACC. Students had the chance to learn about the voyages of the Hokulea and explore the concepts of the ship, celestial navigation and tradition through dance, drama and fine arts. As always, it was a great day with lots of wonderful information and hands-on experiences for the kids.
We had a great field trip to Kealia Pond earlier this week. On this outing, we learned about the plants and animals that make up this special wetland. Before we went, we read about some of those animals and learned about the various ways they got to our island ("Wind", "Wings" and "Waves"). The kids had a great time using binoculars to watch birds, trying to collect butterflies and fishing in the pond. It was a muddy success and many thanks to our chaperones who volunteered their time to help out.
This year, our class was invited to join classes from all over the country in a "postcard tour" of the United States. We researched interesting facts about Hawaii and used that information to write postcards to one class in each state. In return, we have been receiving postcards from all over the country and have been able to learn fun facts about every state. It's made for a fun, ongoing geography lesson as well, as we look at our map to see where each state is. It has been fun getting mail from all over the country and learning about all of the different states.
