This week, we put our math skills to use to help us create art. Students practiced using their rulers to measure to the half inch in order to create wreaths or circle art. Before they were able to cut the slits needed to create the art/wreath, they first had to measure out half-inch strips -- and a lot of them. They had a lot of fun making them and the wreaths are really cute.
The next day, we worked together as a class to write about our project. Students practiced indenting a paragraph, minding margins and worked on using time-order words, such as "first", "next," "then," and "last."

Standards Addressed in this Project:
Math Standards
CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.B.4
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units— whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
Writing Standards
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.2
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.2.c
Use linking words and phrases (e.g., also, another, and, more, but) to connect ideas within categories of information.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.2.d
Provide a concluding statement or section.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.4
With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1-3 above.)
